The Carbonear Cinema went up in flames late in the evening on Oct. 26, not long after patrons who had earlier attended a movie had left the building. Investigators said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.

Oates said at the time the building was “salvageable,” and he indicated he would like to reopen the business, which had been in operation at the Powell Drive operation since 1979.
