CBN ath­letes re­ceive schol­ar­ships

Two ath­letes from the Con­cep­tion Bay North re­gion have been se­lected as schol­ar­ship re­cip­i­ents as a part of the 2012 Sport New­found­land and Labrador Schol­ar­ship Pro­gram.

Gar­rett Mercer of Bay Roberts and Vic­to­ria Ralph of Car­bon­ear will be ben­e­fit from be­ing se­lected as a part of 19 schol­ar­ships given out at a re­cep­tion at the John­son Geo Cen­tre in St. John’s, May 4.

Mercer was se­lected for his suc­cess in the sport of 5-pin bowl­ing, while Ralph was cho­sen for her wrestling ex­ploits.

“These schol­ar­ship win­ners are true ex­am­ples of ex­cel­lence in sport,” Re­cre­ation Min­is­ter Der­rick Dal­ley in a news re­lease. “It is very im­por­tant to rec­og­nize their ac­com­plish­ments, both aca­demic and ath­letic, and to en­cour­age them in their cho­sen sport.”

The schol­ar­ship pro­gram is de­signed to pro­vide ama­teur ath­letes en­rolled in post sec­ondary ed­u­ca­tion fi­nan­cial as­sis­tance needed to help off­set the cost of train­ing and com­pe­ti­tion.

“We are very proud of these re­cip­i­ents,” added Sport New­found­land and Labrador pres­i­dent Doug Fowler in a re­lease. “These ath­letes, coaches and of­fi­cials work hard to pro­mote their sports and these schol­ar­ships will help them con­tinue their pur­suit of ex­cel­lent in their ath­let­ics.”

Sport New­found­land and Labrador rep­re­sents over 55 pro­vin­cial sport or­ga­ni­za­tions in New­found­land and Labrador by pro­vid­ing pro­grams and ser­vices in the pro­mo­tion of sport and phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity.
