Danny would never allow it
Many of you know that I was not as fond of Danny Williams as most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. But I must admit, when it comes to standing up for this province, Danny was the guy to do it.
Now, in my first letter to the editor since last spring, I want to bring to your attention the happenings in this province that Danny would never have allowed to happen.
First, Prime Minister Stephen Harper would not have been greeted with open arms. Premier Kathy Dunderdale made a big mistake doing that. I know Danny probably called it quits because he refused to ask Harper for the loan guarantee for the Muskrat Falls, but if he had known Harper would be found in contempt of Parliament, just four months later, I think Danny would have stayed on as premier and gone on a cross-country tour to promote the ABC campaign!
Then, with the shutting down of the Marine Maritime Sub-centre, Danny would have pulled every flag from the province, I’m sure.
Now we see the EI service centres being closed, except in Labrador, and our people being ripped apart with the Old Age Security debacle, lied to by Ottawa in every speech, and generally treated like we were for 50 years after Confederation.
Then, on May 17, I learn a six-year-old promise that was reiterated again in April 2011 by Harper himself, was taken away. 5 Wing Goose Bay will not get the 650 person battalion that was promised, nor the new long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron for the air force.
Oh Danny Boy, where are you? Please come back and sort the mess out that Dunderdale has admitted she has no clout to deal with.
As for Dunderdale, call your friend Steve and ask if you can get a Senate seat ,where you only have to deal with decisions others have already made. We need a premier with guts and commitment, not a cloutless clown for the prime minister to laugh at.
