The Carbonear based Relic Riders Motorcycle Club has been awarded a regional volunteer of the year award by the Canadian Diabetes Association.

The presentation took place in St. John’s on April 26, and recognizes the ongoing efforts of the club to raise awareness and funds for the association.

Club member Gord Ash said the award came as a surprise, and members are very humbled by the attention.

The presentation took place during the association’s annual general meeting.

Since 2003, the club has hosted an annual Show ‘N Shine at Paddy’s Gar- den in Carbonear, with the proceeds supporting a children’s camping program called Camp Douwanna.

In all, the club has donated some $38,000, and that number will grow following this year’s event, which is scheduled for July 28-29.

“To be able to help kids affected with juvenile diabetes is a wonderful feeling,” Ash added.

Ash said an incredible effort is made to host the family friendly event, both by club members and their spouses.

Club president Bruno Reichel accepted the award, which can go to an individual or group.

“The spirit of togetherness, teamwork and community displayed by this family of diabetes champions is truly inspiring,” said Carol Ann Smith, regional director, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 2012 volunteers of the year award honours those who have gone above and beyond to support the work of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

The club decided to stage the Show ‘ N Shine after Brittany Trickett, the daughter of one of its members, Neil “Buzz” Trickett, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.

The club’s financial support gives children an opportunity to learn about diabetes management in a safe and fun environment, said Smith.
