Soccer roundup

The Compass - - OPINION -

There is plenty of excitement in the soccer world these days with the Euro 2012 tournament featuring some of the best teams in the world. Local clubs in this area are also generating excitement and anticipation as the new season begins.

In fact, the season is well underway for Conception Bay North Lightning, which started the spring program on April 21. It has been a busy start to the season as the Lightning have had a series of player development camps in addition to regular practices for all age groups.

Three Lightning teams are playing in St. John’s Metro League — under-10, under-12 and under-16 boys. All three teams have already played games and are very competitive. Both the under-16 and under-12 teams won their opening games. The CBN Lightning ladies’ team also played its first game of the season and pulled out a victory over Placentia.

CBN under-18 is playing in the St. John’s Intermediate League again this season. They also had a good result as they earned a 1-1 tie with the Fieldians Intermediate squad. This team is preparing for the provincial under-18 Mega, which will be hosted in CBN in late July. They will be contenders for a provincial title.

Coaches Tip

Parents need to be cautious when buying soccer cleats for their child. It is important that soccer be on the label and make sure they fit snugly. There is no need to spend a lot of money because children grow quickly and they will only fit for one season. I would encourage parents to sit with their children and watch some of the Euro 2012 games to get a better understanding of the game.
