Local schools receive caring awards
Four schools in Conception Bay North have been named winners of Safe and Caring Schools Special Project Awards.
They include the following: Amalgamated Academy (Bay Roberts), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Holy Redeemer Elementary (Spaniard’s Bay) and St. Peter’s Elementary (Upper Island Cove).
They were among the 39 schools throughout the province that have received the award for establishing and maintaining safe and caring learning environments. The award comes with a $500 crash prize.
The provincial government’s 2011-12 Safe and Caring Awards program recognizes efforts made by students and school communities to eradicate all forms of violence, and to promote respectful learning environments.
“Addressing violence, harassment and intimidation in schools, through our Safe and Caring Schools initiative, is a major priority for this government,” said Education Minister Clyde Jackman.
“We know that a safe and respectful school environment can only be sustained when the entire school community is involved. These awards clearly demonstrate that schools, and students in particular, recognize that everybody deserves to feel safe and accepted for who they are, and they are promoting this message in their schools, and in their communities.”
Some 11 students from throughout the province were also awarded the Safe and Caring Schools Graduating Student Award, which includes a $500 post-secondary tuition voucher, for their efforts to combat all forms of bullying. None of the winners were from this region. “Students have become leaders in our collective efforts to eradicate bullying,” said Jackman. “From planning and participating in anti-bullying activities, to initiating and supporting gay-straight alliances, I want to commend these students, their teachers, and their school communities for helping create learning environments where everyone is treated with respect.”
