Vet­er­ans High­way ruts be­ing re­paired

Driv­ers who dread those ruts in the pave­ment along Vet­er­ans Memo­rial High­way will be re­lieved to learn sec­tions of Route 75 be­tween Bay Roberts and Car­bon­ear are be­ing re­paired this sum­mer.

Ap­prox­i­mately 6.6 lane-kilo­me­ters will be re­paired, ac­cord­ing to the min­is­ter of Trans­porta­tion and Works.

Tom Hed­der­son said sec­tions of the TCH be­tween the Holy­rood ac­cess road and Whit­bourne, to­talling ap­prox­i­mately 22 lane- kilo­me­ters are also hav­ing ruts re­paired.

De­scrib­ing the ar­eas as among “the high­est-trav­elled sec­tions of high­way in our prov­ince,” the Har­bour Main MHA sug­gested, “the re­pairs will help im­prove the driv­ing ex­pe­ri­ence for many com­muters.”

Some $165.1 mil­lion was ear­marked in this year’s pro­vin­cial bud­get to en­hance pro­vin­cial road and bridge in­fra­struc­ture, in­clud­ing $60.1 mil­lion for the pro­vin­cial roads im­prove­ment pro­gram. The feds also con­trib­ute an­other $60 mil­lion for a to­tal of $225.1 mil­lion in 2012-13.
