Green light for Bay Arena senior team
Efforts have moved into full gear to ice an Avalon East Senior Hockey League team at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts this fall.
Team spokesman Brian Hurley said the committee had not held serious discussions in the past couple of months while it waited for the final verdict.
“We didn’t want to compete for the Herder,” Hurley told The Compass last week. “With that hurdle cleared, things are full speed ahead with a lot of work to do in a short period of time.”
It will mark the first time in over a decade that senior hockey has been played in that part of Conception Bay North.
In the decision made by Hockey NL, the Avalon East league will maintain its status as a B category team this season and focus on league expansion.
With the decision, the league will consist of five teams with expansions from Bay Roberts and Mount Pearl joining St. John’s, Bell Island and Torbay.
That work includes icing a team, finding a corporate sponsor and putting a coaching staff behind the bench.
The team is expected to start identifying and contacting potential players and beginning the onice work.
“We want to ice a team in order to give some guys a competitive game of hockey,” said Hurley.
The first open try-out is expected to take place on Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Bay Arena.
Hurley explained that the team will be bolstered with players who have come up through the junior ranks, and he is keen to assemble a competitive roster.
“We’ve been approached by a number of people wanting a game of hockey.”
Hurley emphasized that players will not be paid, though “it won’t cost them to play.”
“There’ll be a bit of (hockey) tape and a few beer after the game. And we may pay for gas for those who have to travel,” he said.
The team has a couple of potential sponsors in mind, and is expected to approach them for support this week.
The team is also in the market for a coaching staff, along with a trainer and equipment manager.
The organizing committee also consists of Rod Noseworthy, Brian Ryan and Edsel Parsons. It will next meet Sept. 27 (7:30 p.m.) at the Bay Arena, and more volunteers are welcomed. firstname.lastname@example.org
