Butt’s Esso captures softball title
Butt’s Esso was crowned champions of the Carbonear men’s slopitch softball league after sweeping West Side Charlie’s 3-0 in the bestof- five series at the Carbonear Recreation Complex on Sept 11.
In the deciding game, Butt’s decimated West Side by a score of 15-3 to secure the title.
Jeff Parsons, Steven Peach and Marty Tilly sparked the offense for Butt’s, picking up three hits apiece. Charl Clarke, Blair Parsons, Jason Power, Gerard Griffin and Jody Doyle had two hits in the victory.
The top offensive force for West Side was Frank Finlayson, who had three hits.
Gerard Griffin toed the rubber for the win, and Sam White took the loss.
In Game 2 on Sept. 11, Butt’s narrowly bested West Side, 11-7.
Chad Parsons led the way for Butt’s, picking up three hits. Also chipping in were Steven Peach, Gerard Griffin and Marty Tilly, with two hits.
For West Side, Scott Cleary had three hits at the plate. Kevin Penney, John Jaques and Roy Flight also had two hits.
Butt’s opened the championship series by squeaking by West Side 76 on Sept. 10.
Leading Butt’s offensive charge were Blair Parsons, Chad Parsons and Luke Hogan, with two hits each.
Frank Finlayson picked up three hits in the loss.
Members of the championship team include the following: Charl Clarke, Blair Parsons, Dennis King, Jeff Parsons, Steven Peach, Jason Power, Chad Parsons, Mat Davis, Gerard Griffin, Jody Doyle, Marty Tilley, Ryan Parsons, Luke Hogan and Ryan Dean.
West Side and East Coast Concrete squared off in the best-of-five semifinal series for the chance to meet Butt’s in the finals. West Side moved on after a thrilling 3-2 series win.
In Game 5 on Sept 10, West Side bested East Coast in a close 4-3 win.
Frank Finlayson and Scott Cleary led the way with two hits apiece.
Top hitters for East Coast were Jeremy Doyle, Phil Hurley and Chris White with two hits each.
Sam White pitched the victory, and Stephen King took the loss.
On Sept. 5, both teams met in Game 4 with the East Coast trailing in the series 2-1. East Coast produced a 3-1 victory to even the series.
Chirs Parsons led the charge at the plate with two hits, while Brad Gallant, Jim King, Gord King, Phil Hurley and Bradley Harris had one hit apiece in the win.
Frank Finlayson and Mike Whiteway had two hits in the loss.
Stephen King toed the rubber in victory and Sam White suffered the defeat.
In Game 3, East Coast got back into the series after doubling up West Side 4-2.
Jim King led the charge at the plate for East Coast with three hits, while Chad Parsons had two hits.
For West Side, Paul McCarthy led the way with three hits.
West Side went up 2-0 on East Coast after taking Game 2 with an 8-2 victory on Sept. 4.
Kevin Penney had three hits in the win. For East Coast, Jim King and Jeremy Doyle had two hits apiece.
West Side got out to a good start against East Coast with a 5-3 victory to take a 1-0 semifinal series lead, also on Sept. 4.
For the winners, Tim Brake and Kevin Penney had three hits apiece, while leading the charge for East Coast were Mike Squires, Stephen King and Chris White with two hits each.
