School board stays course
Despite lobby by parents, community leaders, schools still slated for closure
The Eastern School District showed it was more than willing to tweak it plans when it came to closing rural schools during a board meeting in Shoal Harbour on Nov. 7.
But that f lexibility was not extended to schools in Whitbourne and Heart’s Delight-Islington.
Despite a lobby by parents and community leaders in both communities to save their schools, the board appears set to seal the fate of Whitbourne Elementary and Epiphany Elementary — both kindergarten to Grade 6 schools — during its next regular meeting in Spaniard’s Bay on Dec. 13.
Epiphany Elementary in Heart’s Delight-Islington (pictured here) now appears destined for permanent closure at the end of this academic year.
