Ascension Collegiate bags regional table tennis crown
Elizabeth Hicks of Carbonear Collegiate was the lone gold medal winner at the regional table tennis playdowns not from Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts.
Hicks beat out Alexx Wells and Rebecca French, both from Ascension, to take the gold medal in girls’ singles action.
Hicks picked up a silver medal in the mixed doubles with her teammate Dylan Saunders. The team from Carbonear lost out to Taylor Norman and Cody Collins.
On the team stage, Ascension grabbed the gold medal, besting the representatives from Roncalli High in Avondale.
The rest of the competition was as followed:
• Boys singles — gold, Nick Hiscock (Ascension Collegiate); silver, Taylor Norman (Ascension Collegiate); bronze, Riley Kenny (Roncalli);
• Girls doubles — gold, Rebecca French/Katie Power (Ascension Collegiate); silver, Janelle Bishop/Nicole Kennedy (Ascension Collegiate); bronze, Emily Kieley/Victoria Healey (Roncalli);
• Boys doubles — gold, Taylor Norman/Cody Collins (Ascension Collegiate); silver, Andrew Roberts/Zack Noseworthy (Ascension Collegiate);
• Mixed doubles — gold, Nick Hiscock/Alexx Wells (Ascension Collegiate); silver, Dylan Saun- ders/Elizabeth Hicks (Carbonear Collegiate); Riley Kenny/Emily Keiley (Roncalli).
The winners of the team event and the gold medal winners in each category advance to the provincial championship, scheduled for Dorset Collegiate on Pilley’s Island on Feb. 22-23.
Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts will be sending 10 table tennis athletes to the provincial championships being held at Dorset Collegiate on Pilley’s Island on Feb. 22-23. Save for the girls’ singles division, which was won by Elizabeth Hicks of Carbonear Collegiate, Ascension athletes swept the tournament.
