Angels get their medals
TP Explosions dethroned as provincial synchro skating champs
The Conception Bay North Skating Club Ice Angels are provincial champs.
The synchronized skating team out of Bay Roberts and Harbour Grace captured the elementary division title at the 2013 Skate Newfoundland and Labrador Synchronized Skating Championships, held at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay on Feb. 15-16.
The Ice Angels, comprised of skaters ages 9-12, beat out six other teams to take the coveted crown after posting a score of 24.98. That score put the club up two points over its closest competitor, a squad from Corner Brook.
Coach Melissa Saunders was impressed with the skate put forth by her young charges.
“It was a clean skate. There were no falls,” she said late last week while tying her skates at the Bay Arena before practice.
The team did exceptional in two of its elements, getting plus marks on those.
“So, they had a better than perfect score on those elements, and they lost .1 of a mark and that was from one judge,” she said. “So, they had a really good skate.”
Saunders knew there was a good chance her squad could walk away with the title, but they were going up against some tough competition.
It was a nervous time waiting for the judges’ scores. When they finally came, the screams that erupted from the excited skaters were loud and rambunctious.
“All you could hear throughout the stadium was them screaming,” said Saunders. “I didn’t even get the chance to go down and look at their paper, they came and told me right away.”
The coach said she was proud of the way her team skated.
“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Saunders.
The Ice Angels were not the only local team in the elementary division. The TP Eruptions, from Whitbourne, finished in seventh.
In total, eight teams from the Trinity Conception Region took part in the competition.
Atlantic champions, the TP Explosions came into the tournament gunning for its fourth straight provincial title in the pre-novice division.
The team was in tough with the Pre-Novice Starlites of the Mount Pearl Figure Skating Club. Unfortunately, a four-peat was not in the cards for the Explosions (31.74), as the Starlites (32.70) bested the Whitbourne-based club by a single point. The Icicles, of CBNSC, rounded out the seven team division with a score of 24.39.
In the adult II division, the TP Rusty Edges came in second with a score 36.38. They lost to Classic Edges of Mount Pearl, who scored 37.11.
The TP Flames came in third in the juvenile division with a score of 29.23.
The TP Sparks, skating in the beginner I division, captured silver with a score of 10.63. The Ice Sparkles, of CBNSC, were sixth with a score of 8.34.
