Veteran councillor wants ward system in Bay Roberts
As a member of the Bay Roberts town council for the past 20 years I have witnessed many changes, many decisions made, many conflicts, and most importantly much success. I have been part of the process in decision-making, prioritizing and ultimately what we as a council are all about, meeting the needs of the community.
During this process I have observed what works and what does not work. I feel that council has done a wonderful job with this and commend all involved for that. That being said, I believe that as an evolving town new and innovative ideas are encouraged and welcomed.
As we know, election time is drawing near, making this the prime time to bring forth a new idea for all to think about — a ward system.
Bay Roberts is unique in its title. Although we are one as a municipality we are made up of many sub-communities. It goes without saying that the needs and wants of these various sub-communities differ. As a council we do our best to ensure all needs are treated with equal importance, equally voiced and addressed. However, there are strategies used to prioritize and meet these individual needs. My idea of equal representation within communities strengthens the voice of the people equally and democratically.
Many times when someone asks, “Where are you from?” we are not always inclined to say Bay Roberts. Many times we say Coleys Point, Country Road, or Shearstown.
Why? Because the citizens of our town value and take pride in their respective subcommunities. The Town of Bay Roberts has shown that it is capable of responding to change. A ward system is the next logical step in the evolution of our great town.
Think of it. A council with representation from each sub-community reflecting the needs of each and the town as a whole. Something to think about!
