Al­co­hol fac­tor in rollover, say po­lice

Po­lice have con­firmed that al­co­hol and speed were fac­tors in a se­ri­ous sin­gle ve­hi­cle ac­ci­dent that oc­curred on Route 70 near Til­ton just af­ter 5 p.m. on Thurs­day, May 16.

RCMP Sgt. Greg Hicks told The Com­pass on Fri­day that the 2006 Ford Fo­cus left the high­way and rolled over, and fire­fight­ers from Har­bour Grace used spe­cial ex­tri­ca­tion tools to re­move one of the young men.

A 19-year-old male from Bay Roberts was trans­ported to hos­pi­tal in Car­bon­ear with what are be­ing de­scribed as se­ri­ous in­juries. A sec­ond oc­cu­pant, a 20-year-old male from Bay Roberts, was hos­pi­tal­ized, but later re­leased.

Hicks said ac­ci­dent re­con­struc­tion spe­cial­ists were called to the scene, and an in­ves­ti­ga­tion is on­go­ing. He could not con­firm which oc­cu­pant was driv­ing the ve­hi­cle.

The ve­hi­cle was head­ing south, to­wards Bay Roberts.

The road was closed for more than five hours as po­lice of­fi­cers and emer­gency re­spon­ders at­tended to the scene.
