Alcohol factor in rollover, say police
Police have confirmed that alcohol and speed were factors in a serious single vehicle accident that occurred on Route 70 near Tilton just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16.
RCMP Sgt. Greg Hicks told The Compass on Friday that the 2006 Ford Focus left the highway and rolled over, and firefighters from Harbour Grace used special extrication tools to remove one of the young men.
A 19-year-old male from Bay Roberts was transported to hospital in Carbonear with what are being described as serious injuries. A second occupant, a 20-year-old male from Bay Roberts, was hospitalized, but later released.
Hicks said accident reconstruction specialists were called to the scene, and an investigation is ongoing. He could not confirm which occupant was driving the vehicle.
The vehicle was heading south, towards Bay Roberts.
The road was closed for more than five hours as police officers and emergency responders attended to the scene.
