Huge win for Wilkins
Clarke’s Beach student awarded Lester B. Pearson Scholarship
Zoë Wilkins of Clarke’s Beach, a student at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts, has been named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Lester B. Pearson Scholarship for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Wilkins, 17, is the second young person from the Trinity Conception region to win the award in the last three years, joining Erin Bonisteel of New Harbour, who won in 2011. Astrid Peacock of Carbonear captured the award in 2006.
She is the daughter of Peter Wilkins and Michelle Mahoney-Wilkins.
“Zoë was selected on the basis of academic achievement, volunteer activities and qualities of character made evident in a detailed application and interview process,” said Minister of Education Clyde Jackman in a release on May 21.
The Lester B. Pearson Scholarship is valued at $34,000 annually, good for $68,000 provided for two years of pre-university study at Pearson College, a United World College in Victoria, British Columbia.
An additional $12,000 will be provided through corporate and community sponsors, for a total of $80,000.
In September, Wilkins will be joining last year’s winner and Lethbridge native Asia Holloway at Pearson College.
In the release, Wilkins was praised for her involvement in a wide variety of school and community-based activities. She is a member of several school committees, as well as a member of school and community-based bands.
The vice-principal of student council at Ascension Collegiate is also a member of the math team, and has been successful in the realm of public speaking. Wilkins recently placed second at the provincial Lions Club speak-off competition in Gander.
“It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Zoë on this tremendous accomplishment … she will be a great student representative of this province at this prestigious academic institution,” said Port de Grave MHA Glenn Littlejohn.
