Gull Is­land man ac­cused of as­sault­ing his mother

A male res­i­dent of Gull Is­land al­leged to have as­saulted his mother on the af­ter­noon of Thurs­day, May 30 was un­der­go­ing a psy­chi­atric as­sess­ment last week at the Water­ford Hos­pi­tal in St. John’s.

Po­lice al­lege the 49-year-old grabbed his mother and in­jured her hand, while also pos­sess­ing a knife in a threat­en­ing man­ner. The mother was ap­par­ently try­ing to sep­a­rate the ac­cused and his older sis­ter, who were in­volved in a dis­pute.

It’s not known how long the as­sess­ment will take, and po­lice were say­ing Fri­day the ac­cused will make a court ap­pear­ance as soon as he is re­leased from the hos­pi­tal.

The man is fac­ing a se­ries of charges, in­clud­ing danger­ous op­er­a­tion of a mo­tor ve­hi­cle, pos­ses­sion of a weapon while com­mit­ting an as­sault, ut­ter­ing threats, as­sault with a weapon, and ag­gra­vated as­sault.

Po­lice say the man does not have any pre­vi­ous crim­i­nal con­vic­tions, and was co-op­er­a­tive dur­ing his ar­rest.
