Gull Island man accused of assaulting his mother
A male resident of Gull Island alleged to have assaulted his mother on the afternoon of Thursday, May 30 was undergoing a psychiatric assessment last week at the Waterford Hospital in St. John’s.
Police allege the 49-year-old grabbed his mother and injured her hand, while also possessing a knife in a threatening manner. The mother was apparently trying to separate the accused and his older sister, who were involved in a dispute.
It’s not known how long the assessment will take, and police were saying Friday the accused will make a court appearance as soon as he is released from the hospital.
The man is facing a series of charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon while committing an assault, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and aggravated assault.
Police say the man does not have any previous criminal convictions, and was co-operative during his arrest.
