More shopping options needed, says student writer

The Compass - - OPINION - — Brandon West writes from Bay Roberts

Editor’s note: the author of this letter is a student at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts, and penned these words as part of a writing course.

I live in the Town of Bay Robert’s and according to a 2011 study 5,818 people live here. We have an overwhelming amount of fast food places and restaurants and with the opening of another new restaurant, it’s come to my attention that besides all the food services there is almost nowhere to go for entertainment or shopping.

One of the most popular stores in Bay Roberts is a dollar store and that is a pretty sad fact. According to a study in 2009, some dollar stores make $1.420 billion revenue; while a store like “American Eagle Outfitters” makes $3.160 billion (according to a 2011 study). This shows that a store like American Eagle belongs in Bay Roberts. I think that the town should invest in a mall. I mean a mall with multiple clothing stores and entertainment.

Most people have to go all the way to St.John’s to buy some new clothing or even a video game. A mall could save gas by saving people a trip to St. John’s. Anyone from Bay Roberts who would usually go to the Avalon Mall or any other shopping centre would go to this one instead. It would create more job opportunities, especially for young people and bring in a lot of money for the town.

Also, I think we should even add a movie theatre. Back a long time ago there was a cinema in Bay Roberts and I think it’s a good idea to bring one back. Ever since the cinema in Carbonear closed down, it is impossible to watch a movie in theatres unless you go to St. John’s.

Many people travel to town every day to shop or to do something entertaining. If we could create an opportunity like that in Bay Roberts I think it would succeed. Citizens’ money would be spent on quality products in a place where you could just relax and hang out for a while, and maybe catch a movie, too!

Business people need to stop spending so much money on fast food and more money on building places people will go to and enjoy.
