The Kyle deserves a better fate

The Compass - - OPINION -

There is nothing wrong with growing old. Everything gets older, even humans. I would never be ashamed to show my friends from Florida the old Kyle again. Some think there were more pictures taken of the old steamer before she was given a facelift, long before Danny (Cleary) brought the Stanley Cup home.

Some things get better with age. That’s not to say we should let this old historic relic sink — wait, it can’t sink — or rather, disappear before our eyes. So what should happen? If some of our MHAs showed some kind of interest in this regard then it would take on some life of its own. So some questions should be asked of our MHAs and our Members of Parliament in Ottawa.

Would they support such a project? Is there a business-minded person out there with an idea to bring forward?

I discussed this project a long long time ago with a friend who lives in Harbour Grace. His idea was to put the vessel on an even keel by using steel piles as supports. Maybe there is still some interest there? I don’t like to copy other people’s ideas, but I’m sure it would not be hard to get enough interested people together to have a good hard look at where this project could go.

It’s like the 911 number. Keep bringing it up often enough and someone may listen. — Frank Evely Sr. writes
