Wayne Kelly as sharp as ever
Carbonear wins North American dart event in St. John’s; claims $2,200 in prize money
A Carbonear resident who has long been ranked among the best dart players in this province claimed top spot in the opening event of the PDC North American Championship Tour in St. John’s on June 16.
Wayne Kelly defeated Ontario’s Bernie Miller 6-2 in the final, cruising through a field of 80 of the top players in North America and claiming the $2,200 winner’s purse.
Kelly has competed from coast-to-coast in this country, has five provincial men’s titles, five provincial team titles, and numerous finishes in the top-three at the national level.
“He can compete with the best,” his oldest daughter, Krista Kelly-Cox, told The Compass.
The St. John’s competition was the first of eight NACT events which will be played this year.
Kelly’s road to victory included a win over top Canadian youngster Shaun Narain in the last 16 and a semi-final victory over 2012 NACT Order of Merit winner Darin Young, who is the topranked player in the United States.
Miller defeated PDC Tour Card holder Ken MacNeil in the semi-finals and also saw off former World Matchplay champion Larry Butler as he claimed the $1,400 runner-up prize.
Kelly has been throwing darts for more than 35 years, and competes locally in a league at West Side Charlies. He has a busy work schedule at the construction site of the new nickel processing plant in Long Harbour, but still manages to practice about an hour each day, Krista stated.
When asked how her father was able to win such a highly competitive event, she answered with two simple words — “He’s good.”
Wayne’s influence is also rubbing off on Krista, who is among the top female players in the province and earned the right last month to compete at the national championships in St. John’s.
Meanwhile, the next PDC NACT event will be held July 14 at the Ambassador Conference Resort in Kingston, Ontario as part of the Kingston Open weekend.
If time permits, Kelly may be stepping to the line at that event, said Krista.
