Ambulance service hands out bicycle helmets to North Shore children
On June 17, kindergarten students of Cabot Academy in Western Bay were surprisingly presented with new CSA approved helmets. This was made possible through the Bicycle Helmet Program, spearheaded by the North Shore Central Ambulance Service (NSCA).
This program was started in 2012 by the NSCA in an effort to help teach our children some things they may not know about the need for a CSA approved bicycle helmet while enjoying this sport. Also, to provide each child with their own CSA approved bicycle helmet to wear and protect their head in case of a bicycling mishap.
If you start teaching children at a young age about the importance of safety, in this case bicycle helmet safety, we hope that this importance will stay with them throughout their lives.
The young 17 minds listened attentively as they watched an upbeat video about bicycle helmet safety. As within the video, students were reinforced with the same message in a 20 minute, kid friendly lecture. A catchy slogan of “ABC 123 wearing the proper helmet can protect me” helped reinforce our message.
Attending members of the NSCA were happily surprised at how fast Cabot students got the message. Even furthermore surprised when students understood how to care for their new helmet, when to replace their new helmet, and retained other bicycle helmet information presented in such a short time. Some children commented that they did not have a bicycle helmet, and another commented that they would wear a family member’s old helmet that didn’t fit too well.
Each child thankfully accepted a new CSA approved helmet along with a bicycle helmet safety information package containing reflectors and a small prize donated by a bank in Carbonear.
A healthy snack and prize draw also took place through donations from two businesses in Carbonear.
The North Shore Central Ambulance is grateful to the 15 business from Carbonear and local communities that supported this program again this year. A thank you to the staff of Cabot Academy for inviting us into your school to do this program again this year. A huge thank you to the kindergarten students of Cabot Academy, who without a doubt were appreciative of our presentation and efforts this year.
Remember to stay safe this summer while at play, and use the correct, properly fitting safety helmet appropriate to the sport.
