Team of two swims strong
Poseidon sends Somers, Budden to East Coast Champs
Poseidon Swim Club of Carbonear was one of 29 swim teams to compete at the East Coast Long Course Championship swim meet at the Aquarena in St. John’s July 4-7. The event, called Rock the Blocks, featured 320 swimmers from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Poseidon’s own Allison Somers and Courtney Budden were the club’s only qualifiers to compete at the meet and still pulled off a 26th place finish overall, beating out teams from Sackville, Georgetown and Yarmouth.
Somers continues to show she is in her element in the pool with four of her six performances landing her in the finals. In the 15-andover category, Somers kept up with the best swimmers at the meet, showcasing a fourth place finish in the 200-metre butterfly (2:40.38) final. She also competed in the finals for 50 fly (31.61), 400 individual medley (5:54.57) and 100 fly (1:09.83), finishing 7th, 12th and 13th, respectively. She also compet- ed in 100 (5:02.89).
Budden qualified for the first time in the under-12 category and swam in six events — 50 metre fly (40.56), 100 free (1:17.79), 200 free (2:46.73), 200 backstroke (3:05.76), 200 IM (3:15.34) and 400 free (5:49.19). Although she did not make the finals in any of her events, Budden did earn several personal best times.
In March, 16-year-old Somers was named to the Newfoundland team that will compete at the Canada Summer Games in Quebec this August, where she will face off against the best swimmers in the country.
She has previously told The Compass she will be using swim meets as practice for the games and, with results like these, she will have no problem keeping up with the pack in the competition.
Somer’s highlights from the meet include being in the top ranking of Newfoundland swimmers in some of her events, including first in 100 and 200 fly, second in 50 fly and 12th in 400 IM.
This was the last competition for Poseidon until next season.
