Big name race for mayor in Victoria

Two veteran municipal leaders to square off for top elected post

The Compass - - FRONT PAGE -

The next few weeks will see intriguing — and some say intense — competition between two experienced councillors in the race for mayor in the Town of Victoria.

This election will see Barry Dooley face off against Robert Clarke. The two have 36 years experience on council between them.

Candidate Barry Dooley has nine years under his belt. After winning a byelection in June 2001 he went on to serve two consecutive terms as deputy mayor. He lost the race for mayor in 2009 against incumbent Mayor Arthur Burke.

Dooley will have some competition by incumbent Robert Clarke, a 27-year veteran councillor.

Both men have entered into an all-or-nothing race that will see only one lead council for the next four years.

Burke has decided to retire from politics after a 20-year stint, 15 of them as mayor.

In fact, only four of the seven current council members will be seeking reelection.

Deputy Mayor Jeanette (Burke) Penney and Coun. Stephen King will also not be on the ballot Sept. 24.

There will, however, be 12 candidates seeking support for councillor from residents of the town. This number is slightly up from 2009, but not comparable to previous years where the town has seen up to 25 candidates in the running.

This year’s ballot for councillors will host four females and eight males that range in age from late 20s to past retirement. These candidates are quite diverse, which is something Burke had wanted when he announced his retirement in June.

Those looking to win a seat in the Town of Victoria for the 2013-2017 term are: • Frankie Antle • Jennifer (Harris) Baker (incumbent) • Dave Bourne • Glenn Clarke • Vivian Hiscock (incumbent) • Kelly (Earle) Loch • Aubrey Rose (incumbent) • Janice Slade • Ronald Slade • Sharon Snooks • Paul Snow • Anthony (Tony) Sutton Jr. For more comprehensive coverage, see future print editions of The Compass.
