Calling for upgrades to Route 73

The Compass - - OPINION -

I write concerning the New Harbour Barrens, Route 73 that connects Trinity Bay to Conception Bay, and the terrible state this road is in.

This road connects Trinity Bay to the closest hospital in Carbonear that includes specialists, medical testing including ultrasounds, blood work, bone density tests, etc., also where surgeries are performed.

The c l o s e s t maj o r g r ocer y stores are in Conception Bay.

Thi s road is used so much all year by both bays, many of the teachers working in Trinity Bay travel from Conception Bay five days- aweek.

Many years ago we were promised that t h i s r oad would be completely paved within five years. That five years is long gone and we still have a terrible road to drive. There are government buildings, services, and agencies located in Conception Bay that both bays use, such as motor registration.

There is a high population of moose on the New Harbour Barrens and in the dark most drivers are watching for them and do not see the holes. These holes are a major safety hazard for these drivers. Also, during weather such as rain or snow, the holes are filled and impossible to see.

We called the Transportation department to see if we could find out when these holes would be filled, which really do not last that long because as soon as it rains the holes are back. They did not return our call.

There was road work done recently, yet the road was left in terrible condition, high ridges from the pavement to the gravel. The bump sign is so close to the area that we are on top of the ridge and gravel road before we have a chance to slow down.

The shoulder of the road is a lso wearing away in many places, and this is hazardous.

I would like to hear from someone concerning this issue. Also, who are we supposed to contact in the governme n t when there are problems? From my experience over the years no one will take responsibility for this road. Everyone wants to pass it on to someone else.

So here’s my question: Exactly what Member of the House of Assembly is responsible for Route 73?

All we are asking for is a road that is safe to drive from one bay to the other.

From my experience over the years no one will take responsibility for this road. Everyone wants to pass it on to

someone else.
