Limited hours for Li­brary

Op­er­at­ing hours for the Car­bon­ear pub­lic li­brary are re­duced from Sept. 3-7. The re­duced hours as as fol­lows: Tues­day, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Wed­nes­day and Thurs­day, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Fri­day, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and Satur­day, noon to 2 p.m.

Com­mu­nity theatre

Avalon Com­mu­nity Theatre group is get­ting ready to launch its next pro­duc­tion, The Mum­ber­ley In­her­i­tance by War­ren Graves, to be staged at the Sheila NaGeira Theatre on Fri­day, Nov. 15. The group is in need of peo­ple both on stage and back­stage, for prepa­ra­tion and for the per­for­mance night. The Labrador Fish­ery

An event called “Twas on the Labrador” will take place Fri­day, Sept. 13 at the Rorke Store Mu­seum, Car­bon­ear, be­gin­ning at 7:30 p.m. This trib­ute to all the peo­ple from the re­gion that sailed to the Labrador Fish­ery on the SS Kyle will in­clude an evening of songs, mu­sic and sto­ries.

Ben­e­fit con­cert

Or­ange Blos­som spe­cial ben­e­fit con­cert for lo­cal com­mu­nity food bank, to be held Fri­day, Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Princess Sheila NaGeira Theatre. Cast of 12 singers and in­stru­men­tal­ists. Ad­mis­sion is a mone­tary do­na­tion at the door.


The Car­bon­ear Pub­lic Li­brary will be­gin regis­tra­tion for its fall story time pro­gram for new­borns to six years old Sept. 10. For more on this and other pro­grams call Tracey at 596-3382.

SS Kyle cel­e­bra­tions

• Sept. 14 — the 4th an­nual Swim the Kyle be­gins at 2 p.m., with Libby Earle, daugh­ter of the late Capt. Guy Earle, leg­endary sea cap­tain and last owner of the ves­sel, will make her an­nual swim to touch the bow of the Kyle. Kelly Rus­sell will re­cite his dad’s poem, “Smoke Room on the Kyle,” author Pat Collins will be sign­ing his book “The Spirit of the Kyle,” Cor­rina Fa­hey will be un­veil­ing a new paint­ing of the Kyle, and the Bat­tal­ion 201 Drum and Gloc Corps will be pro­vid­ing mu­sic.

• Sept 14 — an event caled “Sail the SS Kyle in 1916” will be held at the Bay Roberts Ho­tel, be­gin­ning at 7:30 p.m. In­cludes a meal and en­ter­tain­ment, and guests are wel­come to dress in pe­riod cos­tume. To book, call 1-800-786-4703

The Angli­can parishes in Con­cep­tion Bay North are look­ing for new or lightly used items to fill a con­tainer that will be shipped to Belize. They are still in need of chil­dren’s cloth­ing, books, used bi­cy­cles, toi­letries and items suit­able for school-age chil­dren.
