Women dominate Bryant’s Cove ballot

The Compass - - SPORTS -

Unlike many town councils in Trinity Conception, the Town of Bryant’s Cove is playing a very untraditional role in municipal politics, at least in terms of gender.

Just like the previous town council, females will outnumber males in the council chamber.

Three of the five female candidates are guaranteed to earn a spot on council, while the only two males on the ballot have that opportunity.

The Bryant’s Cove council is made up of five members, unlike other municipalities that have seven. There is no separate ballot for mayor.

For the previous term, both the mayor and deputy mayor positions were held by women, something also uncommon in an area where it is primarily males who hold the top seat.

There will also be some changes to the council.

Deputy Mayor Marie Stone and Coun. Richard Ryall have decided not to run in the election.

Those hoping to take their place on council are: Gloria Best, Margaret Crane (incumbent), Dale Drover, Kimberly Sheppard (incumbent mayor), Roland Stone, Warrick Stone (incumbent) and Mavis Yetman.
