The Bill Pretty Me­mo­rial Play­ground is now a fo­cal point in the com­mu­nity of Dildo. Some 100 chil­dren waited im­pa­tiently to have their first turn on the $95,000 piece of equip­ment dur­ing the grand un­veil­ing Aug. 14.

Af­ter four days of hard work from com­mit­tee mem­bers and many vol­un­teers, the blue and green mon­stros­ity of me­tal and plas­tic sat next to the beach across from Dildo cove, wait­ing for the mo­ment when swarms of chil­dren would be swing­ing on its sturdy bars and climb­ing on it’s strong footholds.

Sur­round­ing the play­ground are me­mo­rial benches marked with the names of de­ceased loved ones.

The event marked a spe­cial oc­ca­sion for the com­mu­nity — the com­ple­tion of a pro­ject two years in the mak­ing. But it also marked an­other spe­cial event — a trib­ute to the late Bill Pretty.
