BARTER, Ruby — passed away Au­gust 30, 2013 at home in Dart­mouth with her fam­ily by her side. She was 68. Born in Bay de Verde, NL she was a daugh­ter of the late Wil­liam and Au­gusta (Blun­den) Barter. Ruby’s ca­reer be­gan with three years in the Royal Cana­dian Navy, but she later fol­lowed her mother’s foot­steps with a long and re­ward­ing ca­reer as a Reg­is­tered Nurse. Fol­low­ing her grad­u­a­tion from Hammersmith Hos­pi­tal in Lon­don, Eng­land she re­turned to Canada and worked as a staff nurse, un­til be­com­ing the head nurse at the Dart­mouth Gen­eral Emer­gency Depart­ment. She went on to be­come the di­rec­tor of Nurs­ing at the High­land View Hos­pi­tal in Amherst, NS and Colch­ester Re­gional Hos­pi­tal in Truro. A life­long learner, Ruby later earned her mas­ter’s de­gree in Health Ser­vices Ad­min­is­tra­tion from Dal­housie Univer­sity and sub­se­quently worked as a health care con­sul­tant in Nova Sco­tia and New Brunswick un­til her re­tire­ment. She loved good food and was an ac­com­plished and ad­ven­tur­ous cook. She en­joyed pre­par­ing won­der­ful meals for her fam­ily and friends at her home in Dart­mouth and the cot­tage in Ch­ester, where she and her hus­band Ge­orge shared many happy times. She was al­ways happy to pro­vide nour­ish­ing, de­li­cious “com­fort food” to any­one who was ill, be­reaved or oth­er­wise needed a lit­tle cheer­ing up. She also loved an­i­mals, es­pe­cially her fe­line pets and strays who were pam­pered with lots of love. Ruby is sur­vived by her sis­ters, Caro­line (Lewis) Pot­ter, Bay de Verde, NL, Cather­ine (Ge­orge) Eddy, Si­b­ley’s Cove, NL and Glo­ria Barter (Dr. David An­drews), Oak­field, NS; as well as many nieces and neph­ews and a de­voted cir­cle of friends. She was pre­de­ceased by her loving hus­band, Dr. Ge­orge Mac­Don­ald; sis­ters, Anne Lock­yer and Elsie Gourley. Cre­ma­tion has taken place un­der the care of A.L. Mat­tatall Fu­neral Home, 217 Port­land Street, Dart­mouth, NS. There will be a pri­vate me­mo­rial ser­vice at a later date, ac­cord­ing to Ruby’s wishes. No flow­ers by re­quest. Me­mo­rial do­na­tions may be made to the Cana­dian Can­cer So­ci­ety for pan­cre­atic can­cer re­search. EARLE, Jessie E. — Passed peace­fully away at the Car­bon­ear Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal on Thurs­day, Au­gust 29, 2013, Jessie E. Earle of Car­bon­ear, age 95 years. Pre­de­ceased by hus­band: Ron­ald W.; sons: Dr. Hunter Earle and Gary Earle; spe­cial friend: Mil­dred Churchill. Left to mourn, two daugh­ters: Ada ( Jim) Pen­ney and Jan­ice (Ge­orge) Pen­ney, both of Car­bon­ear; daugh­ters-in-law: El­iz­a­beth Earle, Mount Pearl and Mar­i­lyn ( Jerry) Paster­nak, USA; nine grand­chil­dren: Craig, Grant, Jan­ice, Su­sanne, Michelle, Christopher, Stephen, Brian and Trevor; nine­teen great- grand­chil­dren; brother- in- law: Wal­ter (Frances) Earle, Car­bon­ear; sis­ters-in-law: Mary (Ge­orge) Saun­ders, St. John’s and Nina Gar­land, Har­bour Grace; also a large num­ber of other rel­a­tives and friends. MARTIN, Roy — Passed peace­fully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hos­pi­tal, St. John’s on Fri­day, Au­gust 30, 2013, Roy Martin of Grates Cove, age 85 years.
