Election a change of pace for Whiteway

For the first time since 2005, citizens in the Town of Whiteway will have an opportunity to vote for their municipal leaders.

Also notable is the gender breakdown, since five of the eight candidates are female. Traditionally, males have dominated municipal politics throughout the province.

Nominations closed in the community on Aug. 28, with seven seats up for grabs.

There was no election in 2009, as all seven candidates were acclaimed. In 2005, there were 10 candidates.

After Freeman Legge was forced to give up his position as councillor in 2012 due to health reasons, Whiteway attempted to hold a byelection to fill the seat.

Again, there was no need for a vote as only Derrick Jackson came forward as a candidate.

Like many smaller communities, Whiteway does not have a separate ballot for mayor and each candidate will be running for a councillor atlarge seat.

Once the council has been elected, councillors will then decide who will fill the positions of mayor and deputy mayor.

Mayor Craig Whelan is once again placing his name on the ballot. He has previosly served as the town’s deputy mayor and was a member of the town council acclaimed in 2009.

Meanwhile, there will be at least three new faces around the table. Not seeking re-election this time around are councillors Cecil Brown and Barbara Roberts, along with Deputy Mayor Lorraine Brown.

Also seeking re-election are councillors Raymond Legge, Derrick Jackson and Heather Jackson, while the following is a list of challengers: • Barbara George; • Jacqueline George; • Jo-Lynn Jackson; and • Corrinne Pollett.
