Residents in the Town of Bay de Verde will have a big decision to make Sept. 24 when they head to the polls. Unlike some municipalities of similar size, they have enough candidates to potentially vote in a whole new council.

Fourteen residents have been nominated for seven positions and all former councillors, including the mayor, will also be on the ballot.

Incumbent Mayor Gerard Murphy is surprised by the large number of candidates, saying it is the most he has seen in his 16 years on council.

Town officials say little is known about why so many challengers have come forward. Murphy also has no definitive explanation, saying the town is in a good place right now.

“Bay de Verde is currently enjoying a very healthy financial situation,” he explained. “Several of my terms have been difficult terms serving the community… but we have passed those difficult years.”

Whoever takes their place on the next council will have the opportunity to do some sewer extension and road upgrading, Murphy noted.

All seven challengers for council are male, but three females are hoping to get re-elected.

Murphy said the gender, age or any other distinction is not important for him as a voter.

“It’s a question of an individual’s own genuine interest without a personal agent,” he said. “The important thing for me is the interest (candidates) bring with them. Genuine, not a personal agenda.” “The number of candidates removes the apathy that has existed in municipal politics for a long time.”

Those seeking a seat on council are Ross Blundon, Harry Bowles, Gerard Broderick (incumbent), Bradley Coish, Christopher Coish, Gordon Coish (incumbent deputy mayor), Karl Coish, Cavell Curl, Juanita Emberley (incumbent), Louis Keats (incumbent), Carrie Potter (incumbent), Dean Potter and Jennie Riggs (incumbent).
