Having fun at the Blueberry Run
The 30th running of the Blueberry Harvest Run in Harbour Grace took place Sunday, Sept. 15. Organizers say it was a successful event, and featured a large number of local runners. The event included a three-kilometre race that attracted many young runners, and a more challenging 10 kilometre road race that was won by Harbour Grace native Steven Barnes (male) and 16-year-old Anna Montgomery of Hant’s Harbour ( female). Here are some scenes.
Participants in the three-kilometre race featured mostly young runners — some 70-plus — from Carbonear Academy and St. Francis School in Harbour Grace.
Damien Coombs and his three-year-old son Isaiah kept a watchful eye out for another member of the Coombs’ family, 10-year-old Noah.
Jackie Harvey of Carbonear (right) gets a shower of water of water from running partner Darlene Warren, also of Carbonear. Harvey lost 120 pounds over the past 18 months, and attributes much of her weight loss to running.
Doug Winsor of Spaniard’s Bay, who turned 65 in August, was taking part in his first competitive road race. The retired truck driver took up running about a dozen years ago, and said it was the best decision he’s ever made, having dropped 60 pounds and improving his overall health. Winsor finished the 10 kilometre course in 49 minutes, 50.7 seconds, placing him ninth overall among the males and first in the 60-andover category.
Patrick Tarrant of North River (left) and Steven Barnes of St. John’s set the pace from start to finish. Tarrant is just 16 years-of-age, and finished second to Barnes.
Shown here are, from left, Jenny Seeman of St. John’s, Ward Mercer of Coley’s Point, Glenn Smith of St. John’s, Elizabeth Evely of Carbonear, Sonya Burden of Carbonear, and Taylor Anderson of Harbour Grace.
Sixteen-year- old Anna Montgomery of Hant’s Harbour was the runaway winners in the female division, finishing nearly seven minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
Jamie Snow of Bay Roberts is seen running smoothly along Water Street in Harbour Grace. The 33-year-old placed third overall in the male division with a time of 43 minutes, 30.8 seconds.
