Big award for Bay Roberts woman
McDonald’s manager named top in eastern Canada
Crystal Deering cheerfully says hello to patrons of the Bay Roberts McDonald’s restaurant as she is completing her daily routine.
This 29-year-old manager shows her energy and positivity as she asks customers how they are doing and offers a hand to those who need some extra help carrying their tray to a table.
The staff work behind the spotless and well-organized counter, grabbing coffee, muffins and smoothies with little disruption. Crystal works with them, ensuring the restaurant is running efficiently.
Her continuous smile is contagious and her staff follows suit by smiling and energetically greeting everyone that walks into the restaurant.
Making it a career
It was 13 years ago when Crystal — at the age of 16 — started her parttime crew person position in the kitchen of the Bay Roberts location.
“I remember my supervisor Rowena — who was my manager at the time — saying, ‘ this girl is going places,’” Crystal says.
She explains that it didn’t take long for her to begin cross-training for front counter and drive thru. Within a year she was promoted to swing manager, then after two years was named a salary manager.
By summer 2008, she had been promoted to store manager in Bay Roberts and then was transferred to the neighbouring Carbonear location. When the opportunity came up for her to return to her native store, she accepted.
She currently manages some 85 staff at the Bay Roberts restaurant.
It is obvious Crystal is a team player after witnessing her work with the staff, cheerfully delegating tasks and offering her assistance when needed.
So there were very few surprises when Crystal was acknowledged recently by McDonalds Restaurants of Canada.
It was announced that Crystal has been honoured with a very prestigious accolade — the Outstanding Manager Award.
The regional vice-president of eastern Canada, Rocco Lofando, explains, “(The award) allows us to recognize excellence, to honour exceptional achievements of our employees such as Crystal Deering and to show our appreciation for their work and devotion.”
As the only manager in Atlantic Canada to receive this honour, Crystal is humbled and proud of her employees.
“This award is because of the hard work we put into the store as a team,” she explains when she takes a few minutes during her busy shift to sit and chat with The Compass.
Crystal’s supervisor, Rowena Stagg, says she is a “great organizer.”
“As a manager she really looks after her people and makes it easy for everyone on her team to get the job done well.”
The award was decided through results of Crystal’s performance and the restaurant results, including sales, customer satisfaction, training and developing assistant managers and crew, maintaining equipment, coordinating local marketing programs and overseeing the operation of the entire store.
Receiving the call
Crystal received news of the award while she was driving. She pulled over to take a phone call and was surprised to hear Rocco on the phone.
“I thought he was joking,” she says. “I was taken back, especially to have a phone call from the vice-president.”
At first, Crystal wondered why he would be calling, hoping she would not hear anything negative. Although Crystal was surprised, she believes the award was earned because of the acknowledgments the restaurant has received over the past year.
“We’ve won some different awards for our customer service and some for our results,” she explains.
The award is not uncommon for the Bay Roberts store. In fact, Rowena has received it on several occasions.
Crystal says the awards are a direct result of the team and the effort they have put forth over the years.
What the future holds
Crystal and her husband, Lee, have been trying to start a family for some time and she is excited to say she is pregnant. This means she will be starting maternity leave next March.
Crystal feels she has an exceptional management staff that is “very supportive and gets results,” so there are no concerns about the store while she’s off.
But for now, she believes the award is a reflection of the great service and staff the restaurant currently boasts.
“The full team is responsible for the results and our successes would not be possible without everyone involved,” Crystal concludes.
Crystal Deering received the outstanding manager’s award for eastern Canada from McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada.
