New season for Poseidon
Poseidon Swim Club of Carbonear has kicked off the season with its first swim meet, which took place in Conception Bay South Oct. 10-12.
Four female swimmers from the team attended the provincial development meet against some 150 swimmers from four other teams — the hometown Bluefins, St. John’s Legends, Mount Pearl Marlins and the Port aux Basques Piranhas.
Alex Neil lead the way for Poseidon with first place finishes in the 100 metre freestyle event in the 11to-12-year-old category with a time of one minute, 23.39 seconds, and the 100m individual medley (1:29.89).
The 11-year-old also placed second in 50m breaststroke (48.08) and 50m butterfly, (39.92) and 12th in the finals for 50m free. Alex also competed in the 50m backstroke event. She earned personal best times in all her events.
Arianna Taylor, also 11, had a great swim meet as well, showing personal best times in three events. Competing in the 11-to-12-year-old category as well, she earned a third place overall finish in the 50m breast (48.81). She also had a personal best in 50m free (39.67) and 50m back (48.17) events. Arianna also competed in 200m free ( 3: 24.89), 50 fly (59.63) and 200m IM (3:54.14).
Thirteen-year-old Drew Forward was the oldest competitor on the team, and gave a great performance in her events. She took home three personal best times.
In the 50m back event Drew swam to eighth place with a time of 42.70, in 50m breast she was ninth with 50.98 and in the 50m fly event, she earned a personal best of 50.98. Drew also competed in 50m free (37.15), 200 free (3:00.08) and 200 IM (3:38.47) events.
For swimming newcomer Brooke Higdon, it was her first meet. She earned some very competitive times in her five chosen events.
In the 100m free event, Brooke swam a time of 1: 41.62 which earned her a sixth place finish. She also finished sixth in the 50m breast event, with a time of 51.64. In the 50 free, Brooke raced a commendable 43.55 and a 50m back time of 52.38. She also competed in the 100m IM event.
Poseidon has 11 events coming up during this swim year, including the annual Swim for Hope, which will take place March 21, 2014. The team also will be hosting the Provincial Invitational in February at the Carbonear Pool on Valley Road.
The next place Poseidon will competed in is the Fall Classic meet at the Aquarena in St. John’s Nov. 8 to 10.
