New sea­son for Po­sei­don

Po­sei­don Swim Club of Car­bon­ear has kicked off the sea­son with its first swim meet, which took place in Con­cep­tion Bay South Oct. 10-12.

Four fe­male swimmers from the team at­tended the pro­vin­cial de­vel­op­ment meet against some 150 swimmers from four other teams — the home­town Bluefins, St. John’s Le­gends, Mount Pearl Mar­lins and the Port aux Basques Pi­ra­nhas.

Alex Neil lead the way for Po­sei­don with first place fin­ishes in the 100 me­tre freestyle event in the 11to-12-year-old cat­e­gory with a time of one minute, 23.39 sec­onds, and the 100m in­di­vid­ual med­ley (1:29.89).

The 11-year-old also placed sec­ond in 50m breast­stroke (48.08) and 50m but­ter­fly, (39.92) and 12th in the fi­nals for 50m free. Alex also com­peted in the 50m back­stroke event. She earned per­sonal best times in all her events.

Ari­anna Tay­lor, also 11, had a great swim meet as well, show­ing per­sonal best times in three events. Com­pet­ing in the 11-to-12-year-old cat­e­gory as well, she earned a third place over­all fin­ish in the 50m breast (48.81). She also had a per­sonal best in 50m free (39.67) and 50m back (48.17) events. Ari­anna also com­peted in 200m free ( 3: 24.89), 50 fly (59.63) and 200m IM (3:54.14).

Thir­teen-year-old Drew For­ward was the old­est com­peti­tor on the team, and gave a great per­for­mance in her events. She took home three per­sonal best times.

In the 50m back event Drew swam to eighth place with a time of 42.70, in 50m breast she was ninth with 50.98 and in the 50m fly event, she earned a per­sonal best of 50.98. Drew also com­peted in 50m free (37.15), 200 free (3:00.08) and 200 IM (3:38.47) events.

For swim­ming new­comer Brooke Hig­don, it was her first meet. She earned some very com­pet­i­tive times in her five cho­sen events.

In the 100m free event, Brooke swam a time of 1: 41.62 which earned her a sixth place fin­ish. She also fin­ished sixth in the 50m breast event, with a time of 51.64. In the 50 free, Brooke raced a com­mend­able 43.55 and a 50m back time of 52.38. She also com­peted in the 100m IM event.

Po­sei­don has 11 events com­ing up dur­ing this swim year, in­clud­ing the an­nual Swim for Hope, which will take place March 21, 2014. The team also will be host­ing the Pro­vin­cial In­vi­ta­tional in Fe­bru­ary at the Car­bon­ear Pool on Val­ley Road.

The next place Po­sei­don will com­peted in is the Fall Clas­sic meet at the Aquarena in St. John’s Nov. 8 to 10.
