Harvest run boasts more than 1,100 students
More than 1,100 students from 32 schools across the Avalon Peninsula, outside the St. John’s area, gathered at the Carbonear Recreation Complex for the annual Harvest Run Oct. 28.
Grade 3 to Level III students ran a variety of courses throughout the day from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m, ending with the 5 kilometre trek from the complex, along the main highway, into the woods and looping back to the start.
The day was full of excitement and encouragement from fellow athletes on the sidelines, with support from coaches near the finish.
Carbonear Academy was arguably the most spirited school, with a, “Let’s go Lions” cheer that could be heard on both ends of the recreation complex.
The event was very structured thanks to organizer Eddie Russell — principal of Carbonear Collegiate — and his team of teachers and volun- teers that offered their assistance throughout the day.
Russell was on hand from early morning until after the event ended, organizing the teachers and volunteers, going over race rules with students and even removing the large rope that was used as a starting line by himself. He referred to the event as a complete success.
Schools involved in the annual Harvest Run were, in alphabetical order, Acreman Elementary, All Hallows Elementary, Amalgamated Academy, Ascension Collegiate, Baccalieu Collegiate, Baltimore School, Cabot Academy, Carbonear Academy, Carbonear Collegiate, Coley’s Point Primary, Cresent Collegiate, Dunne Academy, Fatima Academy, Goulds Elementary, Holy Cross Elementary, Holy Family School, Holy Redeemer Elementary, Immaculate Conception Elementary, Laval High School, Mobile Central High School, Perlwin Elementary, Persalvic Elementary, Roncalli Central High, St. Annes Academy, St. Bernard’s Elementary, St. Francis School, St. Kevin’s Junior High, St. Peter’s Elementary, Stella Maris Academy, Tricon Elementary, Whitbourne Elementary and Woodland Elementary.
