Christmas Day is universally known to Christians as the birthday of Jesus Christ, but for two Conception Bay North families it means a little bit more.

These two families celebrate birthdays on Dec. 25, ensuring a lifetime of mixing birthdays and Christmases, and trying to strike a balance between the two.

Payton Hutchings, 3, and Ian Brazil, 11, are the two children who share their birthday with Our Lord and Saviour.

“I share a birthday with baby Jesus!” exclaimed Payton, who lives in Tilton.

It is not just baby Jesus they share a birthday with. Professional basketball player Eric Gordon was born on Christmas Day in 1988.

The current leader of the Liberal party in Canada, Justin Trudeau, was a Christmas baby. The same goes for Canadian songstress Alannah Myles and British singer Annie Lennox.

‘Here’s looking at you, kid’ actor Humphrey Bogart was another Christmas baby.

“I’m glad (Ian) was born on Christmas Day,” said Matthew Brazil, Ian’s father. “It’s a special day. It couldn’t have worked out any better.

“His first cousin was born on Christmas Eve.” The Brazil’s live in Spaniard’s Bay. In an interesting twist, Payton is not the only member of her family that was born on this sacred day. Her great aunt, Providence Roberts, was also born on Dec. 25.

With both sharing the same birthday, it is only fitting that they share a similar delivery story.

“My due date was on Christmas Eve, but she came a day later,” said Kayla Hutchings, Payton’s mother.

Marilyn Brazil, Ian’s mother, had originally hoped her son would not be born on Christmas Day.

“5:01 on Christmas Eve Matt went to park the car and I was in emergency,” she remembers. “He was born 20 to four in the evening.”

When the babies were born, both were brought to their parents in red Christmas stockings.

“Her little head was peeking out,” Kayla recalled with a smile. Payton’s father’s name is Wayne. For both families, juggling the joys of a birthday along with Christ- mas Day can be a task, but both have a good handle on the act.

Kayla has taken the steps to divide both days, making them both a special occasion.

“I usually have her birthday party the week before Christmas,” she told The Compass.

Kayla wants Payton to have the experiences of both days, even though Payton may seem a little more excited for Christmas.

“I can’t wait to see her blow out her candles,” she said.

The Brazils tend to do things a little different.

Ian has both Christmas and his birthday on the same day. In the morning, the family will celebrate the birth of Jesus the usual way, with gifts and stockings, etc. But, in the afternoon, it will be time for Ian’s birthday.

A few of his friends and family will come over, there will be cake and there will be gifts that Santa couldn’t get too.

Ready for the season

When you ask Ian and Payton if they’re excited for Christmas, their response is written all over their faces.

Each give a smile that stretches the width of their faces and their eyes lit up.

“I ’m excited for Christmas,” exclaims Payton.

“I’m really excited,” said Ian.

Payton has asked for a Barbie doll in her letter to Santa, while Ian has asked for a fly tying kit.

Looking back on Christmas Day three years ago, Kayla says, “(Payton) was the best gift I ever received,” she said.
