A group in Harbour Grace received an early Christmas gift last week after its numbers were chosen in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw.

After 23 years playing the same numbers, six employees and retirees from the Harbour Grace Town Council Office won some $70,000 by matching five numbers and the bonus in the Dec. 21 draw.

Four winning tickets from across the country— two from Ontario, one from western Canada and the group from Harbour Grace — will each receive $70,000 from a large payout of some $280,000.

The council workers have requested their names not be mentioned at this time.

One of the employees told The Compass Dec. 23 that a few extra dollars will certainly help with a few things.

“Everyone hopes to win,” the male employee explained. “That’s why you buy tickets. You hope one day, to win.”

Each of the winners in Harbour Grace will get just under $12,000 apiece if they split the prize evenly.
