Federal funding for small craft harbours
A marginal wharf in Post de Grave will be getting an update in the coming months after an announcement was made Saturday, Dec. 7 in Port de Grave by Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea.
Shea announced $1.6 million in funding for small craft harbours, one of which is Port de Grave, to a small group of port authority members and Department of Fisheries and Oceans representatives at the Harbour Authority building.
A display poster of the Port de Grave project was placed beside the window inside the Harbour Authority, explaining the specifics involved.
“The project will include a reconstruction of a 36 metre portion of marginal wharf. The new 36-metre treated timber cribwork wharf will be complete with a 250 millimetre thick reinforced concrete deck.”
Shea said the money comes from a federal contingency fund that allocates additional funds where needed.
Some $16.6 million was originally included for core harbours in the province for 2013, including a $233,000 wharf repair project that was completed in Port de Grave earlier this year.
Port de Grave will not be the only project in the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region.
Old Perlican has already begun a basin dredging project. Tenders closed Nov. 26, but a contract has not yet been announced. It is expected to cost between $250,000 and $500,000, as per the government buy and sell website.
Other projects announced were armour protection repairs in Savage Cove on the Northern Peninsula as a result of storm damage and a deck replacement, and wharf repairs at Hermitage on the south coast of the island.
Although not announced by Shea, a news release also included two additional projects — channel redredging at Branch on the Cape Shore and slipway repairs in Lourdes on the west coast.
Shea was visiting the province last weekend to make two announcements — the small craft harbours funding and a $500,000 announcement for the Atlantic Seal Development Association pilot project to manufacture new seal meat products — and touring some of the small craft harbours, including Port de Grave and Harbour Grace.
