Pla­cen­tia man vic­tim of scam

Pla­cen­tia RCMP ad­vises pub­lic to be vig­i­lant

The Pla­cen­tia RCMP are adi­visng the pub­lic to be vig­i­lante of phone scams af­ter a fraud com­plaint on Dec. 20.

A 62-year-old male from Pla­cen­tia was the vic­tim of fraud and lost a sum of money from his Visa ac­count as a re­sult. His com­puter was hacked into, and was not work­ing prop­erly. Shortly af­ter, a per­son claim­ing to be a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of soft­ware com­pany Mi­crosoft and took con­trol of the com­puter re­motely.

Once ac­cess was gained to the com­puter, the as­sailant gained ac­cess t o t he man’s PayPal ac­count and re­quested his bank­ing in­for­ma­tion. The vic­tim caught on to the scam be­fore the hacker could re­move funds from the PayPal ac­count.

How­ever, there was money taken from his Visa ac­count.

“We’re try­ing to ed­u­cate peo­ple,” said Cst. Tony Sea­ward.

The RCMP are ad­vis­ing the pub­lic of this scam, as well as ad­vis­ing them not to have any con­tact with un­kown per­sons with re­gards to per­sonal com­puter equip­ment.
