Placentia RCMP advises public to be vigilant
The Placentia RCMP are adivisng the public to be vigilante of phone scams after a fraud complaint on Dec. 20.
A 62-year-old male from Placentia was the victim of fraud and lost a sum of money from his Visa account as a result. His computer was hacked into, and was not working properly. Shortly after, a person claiming to be a representative of software company Microsoft and took control of the computer remotely.
Once access was gained to the computer, the assailant gained access t o t he man’s PayPal account and requested his banking information. The victim caught on to the scam before the hacker could remove funds from the PayPal account.
However, there was money taken from his Visa account.
“We’re trying to educate people,” said Cst. Tony Seaward.
The RCMP are advising the public of this scam, as well as advising them not to have any contact with unkown persons with regards to personal computer equipment.
