For many people in Newfoundland and Labrador, it was a cheerful Christmas season filled with family, friends and the spirit of giving.

Residents on the north shore of Conception Bay from Kingston to Burnt Point shared an experience that was more like a visit from the Grinch.

Three thefts in December from the local volunteer fire hall in Adam’s Cove, the Ronnie Johnson (community) Centre in Western Bay and a shed behind it, left many upset and disappointed that notfor-profit organizations were the target of this kind of illegal activity.

Thousands of dollars worth of items were taken from the three sites, including some emergency firefighting equipment, roofing materials and canteen supplies.

There are persons of interest being investigated, an officer of the Trinity Conception detachment of the RCMP told The Compass.

Specifics were not released by police about the type of “equipment” that was stolen, so not to interfere with the ongoing investigation.

A spokesperson for the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department talked to The Compass Dec. 30, but requested to not be named due to fear of possible retaliation from those who were involved.

The spokesperson said two of the buildings — the fire hall and the community centre — were not broken into, but easi ly accessed, prompting the fire department to believe the person or persons responsible had a key.

The third building — a shed for storing community centre supplies — had the lock broken. The roofing materials were stored in the shed, as was a weed trimmer, which was also taken.

Thefts took place over a threeweek span, said the spokesperson. The shed was accessed sometime between Dec 1 and 7, while the fire hall was entered sometime between Dec 1 and 15.

The community centre is believed to have been targeted the night of Dec. 19.

Some tips have been reported to Crime Stoppers about the thefts, the spokesperson continued, and some people have come forward saying items matching the description of those taken from the shed have been offered to them for purchase.

None of the items have been recovered.

Anyone with information on the thefts are asked to call the Trinity Conception RCMP at 596-5014 or Crime Stoppers at 1- 888- 222TIPS(8477).
