Lo­cal ath­letes named to Avalon bad­minton squad

The Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion-Pla­cen­tia re­gion has its first New­found­land Games ath­letes.

This is af­ter six high school ath­letes were named to the Avalon bad­minton team for the New­found­land and Labrador Win­ter Games be­ing held in Clarenville March 1-9.

They qual­i­fied for the team af­ter fin­ish­ing in the up­per ech­e­lon of the male and fe­male di­vi­sion dur­ing the team qual­i­fier at Queen El­iz­a­beth High School in Fox­trap on Jan. 11.

Bac­calieu Col­le­giate in Old Per­li­can will com­prise a large por­tion of the team with four ath­letes — two males and two fe­males — while As­cen­sion Col­le­giate in Bay Roberts is next with two ath­letes.

Bac­calieu ath­letes An­drew Par­sons of Ochre Pit Cove and Mor­gan Eddy of Lead Cove will rep­re­sent their school and re­gion in the male dou­bles event. Jen­nifer Tuck, of Win­ter­ton, and Katie Keats, of Burnt Point, make up the fe­male dou­bles team.

Bac­calieu as­sis­tant prin­ci­ple Gar­land But­ton was named coach of the team.

Mean­while, Ta­lyor Nor­man and Chris Smith, both of Spa­niard’s Bay, will rep­re­sent the re­gion in male sin­gles com­pe­ti­tion.

Smith will be com­pet­ing in his sec­ond NL Games. In 2012, he was a mem­ber of the Avalon base­ball team that cap­tured the sil­ver medal when the Sum­mer Games were held in Car­bon­ear and Har­bour Grace.

“We’ve got a good team and I think we’ll be com­pet­i­tive,” said But­ton.

Queen El­iz­a­beth’s Hi­lary Young and Emily But­ler are the fe­male sin­gles’ com­peti­tors.

As­cen­sion Col­le­giate’s Amanda Yet­man and Re­becca Shep­pard will serve as al­ter­nates with the fe­male team.

“It’s un­real,” said Smith.
