Local athletes named to Avalon badminton squad
The Trinity-Conception-Placentia region has its first Newfoundland Games athletes.
This is after six high school athletes were named to the Avalon badminton team for the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games being held in Clarenville March 1-9.
They qualified for the team after finishing in the upper echelon of the male and female division during the team qualifier at Queen Elizabeth High School in Foxtrap on Jan. 11.
Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican will comprise a large portion of the team with four athletes — two males and two females — while Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts is next with two athletes.
Baccalieu athletes Andrew Parsons of Ochre Pit Cove and Morgan Eddy of Lead Cove will represent their school and region in the male doubles event. Jennifer Tuck, of Winterton, and Katie Keats, of Burnt Point, make up the female doubles team.
Baccalieu assistant principle Garland Button was named coach of the team.
Meanwhile, Talyor Norman and Chris Smith, both of Spaniard’s Bay, will represent the region in male singles competition.
Smith will be competing in his second NL Games. In 2012, he was a member of the Avalon baseball team that captured the silver medal when the Summer Games were held in Carbonear and Harbour Grace.
“We’ve got a good team and I think we’ll be competitive,” said Button.
Queen Elizabeth’s Hilary Young and Emily Butler are the female singles’ competitors.
Ascension Collegiate’s Amanda Yetman and Rebecca Sheppard will serve as alternates with the female team.
“It’s unreal,” said Smith.
