Lo­cal skaters punch 2014 NL Winter Games tick­ets

Four skaters headed to Clarenville

There was plenty for lo­cal skat­ing clubs to cheer about at the Eastern Di­vi­sion­als com­pe­ti­tion held at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts on Jan. 2526.

Some 165 skaters de­scended on the com­mu­nity in hopes of punch­ing their tick­ets to ei­ther the pro­vin­cial com­pe­ti­tion or the 2014 NL Winter Games in Clarenville March 1-9.

As per an of­fi­cial with Skate New­found­land and Labrador, the first place fin­isher in each cat­e­gory qual­i­fied for the Games.

The fol­low­ing is a list of skaters who qual­i­fied for the Winter Games:

• Pre-novice — Jenna Ef­ford and Meghan White;

• Ju­ve­nile women — Hay­ley Dal­ton and Toni-Lynn Par­sons;

• Se­nior bronze women – Katie Daw­son and Al­li­son Walsh;

• Se­nior bronze men — Ethan Par­sons;

• Pre-ju­ve­nile women (un­der-14) — Laura Crane;

• Pre-ju­ve­nile women (un­der-11) — Sarah Col­lett;

• Pre-ju­ve­nile dance — Bri­anna Rus­sell and An­drew Lit­tle­john;

• STAR 5 (un­der-19) — Chelsea Costello;

• STAR 5 (un­der-13) — Kathryn Pet­ten.

Com­peti­tors from the three lo­cal clubs — Con­cep­tion Bay North Skat­ing Club, PARC Skat­ing Club in Pla­cen­tia and the Trin­ity Pla­cen­tia Fig­ure Skat­ing Club — had ex­cel­lent show­ings all around.

CBNSC lead the way with a bas­ket­ful of medals in a num­ber of cat­e­gories. The club brought home four gold medals, six sil­ver and one bronze. Trin­ity Pla­cen­tia picked up one gold medal, while PARC Skat­ing Club reg­is­tered one bronze medal.

The team of Bri­anna Rus­sell and An­drew Lit­tle­john cap­tured a gold medal in the pre-ju­ve­nile dance divi- sion with a score of 18.93. This nar­rowly placed them ahead of team­mates Ju­lia Keefe and Ethan Par­sons, who fin­ished se­cond in pre­ju­ve­nile dance with a score of 18.46.

Par­sons and Lit­tle­john would com­pete against each other in the se­nior men’s bronze di­vi­sion, with Par­son com­ing out on top. Lit­tle­john would have to set­tle for sil­ver.

CBNSC’s Katie Daw­son nar­rowly edged out the se­cond place fin­isher in the se­nior bronze women (un­der19) for gold with a score of 21.92. PARC’s Al­li­son Walsh picked up the bronze medal.

Trin­ity Pla­cen­tia skater Malanie Do­minie fin­ished in first in the in­tro women (un­der 19) di­vi­sion with a score of 17.35.

Bay Roberts na­tive McKenna Mercer, who skates for the Mount Pearl Skat­ing Club, fin­ished in the top spot in the ju­ve­nile women’s di­vi­sion.

• STAR4 girls (un­der-10) — Jaide Rus­sell (CBNSC), gold;

• Bronze women in­ter­pre­tive — Melissa Rus­sell (CBNSC), sil­ver; Sarah Ge­orge (TPFSC), sev­enth; Cas­san­dra Power (TPFSC), sev­enth; Brooke Burry (TPFSC), ninth;

• Ju­ve­nile women — Toni-Lynn Par­sons (CBNSC), fifth; Maya Pet­ten (CBNSC), sev­enth;

• Se­nior bronze women (un­der19) — Sarah Dawe (CBNSC), fourth; Bai­ley Fowler (CBNSC), sev­enth; Cas­sidy Newhook (TPFSC), ninth;

The top-eight skaters in each di­vi­sion qual­ify for the pro­vin­cial com­pe­ti­tion be­ing held at the Pepsi Cen­tre in Cor­ner Brook Feb. 21-24.
