CeeBee Stars set for playoffs
The Newfoundland Senior Hockey League playoffs are set and the CeeBee Stars have an opponent
The CeeBees and the Mount Pearl Blades will renew acquaintances this weekend (Feb. 14-16) in the eastern division semifinals. The winner will meet first place Clarenville Caribous for the right to play for the Herder Memorial Trophy.
The divisional semifinals will be a best-of-5 series. However, the location of the opening two games was unknown up to Friday. After the league awarded the CeeBees two points for the postponed game with the Western Royals on Jan. 19, they were set to meet the Blades in a makeup game on Feb. 8 at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace.
The two points meant the CeeBees trailed the Blades for second place in the east by just one point. Results of the game were not known prior to deadline.
If the CeeBees managed to pull out the victory in regulation, the series would open in Harbour Grace, but a loss or overtime victory would mean a Mount Pearl start.
The race for second has been indicative of the season series between the two teams, with both teams having played some close contests.
Although the Harbour Grace-based club has just one victory over Mount Pearl this season, games have been close. The CeeBees are 1-3-1 against the Blades.
The greatest margin of victory for either side has been three goals, with one game going to a shootout.
Heading into the series, the CeeBees had won five of their last eight games, including four straight at home and a recent weekend sweep of the Caribous.
The team is playing some of its best hockey to date. The CeeBees will be led into the playoffs by leading scorer Jordan Escott, who had 35 points as of Feb. 7, and goaltender Roger Kennedy, who has sparkled in his stint with the club.
The CeeBees top unit of Escott, Ben Duffy and Colin Feehan have been dynamic as of late and are sure to provide an enhanced sense of excitement at the rink.
Fans at the S.W. Moores are sure to be treated to a tight checking series, with some highlight reel plays mixed in.
