The Poseidon Swim Club continues to be a driving force in competitive swimming this year, bringing home medals from various meets in different events and age groups.

A small group of four seasoned swimmers — Allison Somers, Mark Peddle, Sarah Forward and Drew Forward — showcased their skills in Gander at the Joseph R. Smallwood Arts and Culture Centre Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual Short Course Championships hosted seven teams, including the hometown Gander Lakers, St. John’s Legends, Mount Pearl Marlins, Corner Brook Rapids, Conception Bay South Bluefins, Deer Lake Dolphins and Poseidon Swim Club.

As in previous meets, Carbonear swimmers continued to press the competition, earning great times in each event.

Leading the way was 17-year-old Allison Somers, who was a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games team last year.

Allison earned first place in her three best events, 50, 100 and 200-metre but- terfly with times of 30.91, 1:07.31 and 2:29.50, respectively. She was second in her remaining events, 400 freestyle (4:52.61), 100 free (1:03.90) and 800 free (10:11.93).

Mark Peddle, 17, was the only competitive male swimmer to attend the event from Poseidon. He earned third place in 50 fly (31.44) and 400 free (4:58.51), fourth in 100 fly (1:08.50) and 200 free (2:16.09), fifth in 100 free (1:01.67) and seventh in 50 free (28.58).

Sarah Forward is only 11, but has been a huge competitor in the under-12 age category this season. She earned second in 50 breaststroke (49.71), fifth in 100 breast (1:46.18) and seventh in 200 breast (3:36.37). She also took part in 50 free (35.08), 200 free (2:45.08), 200 individual medley (3:13.05).

Drew Forward also competed at the meet, earning personal best times in the 200 IM with 3:15.98, 100 IM (1:32.51), 200 free (2:45.40) and 50 backstroke (42.16). She also competed in 100 IM (1:32.51) and 200 back (3:12.08).

The next provincial invitational swim meet will be hosted at Poseidon’s home pool, the Carbonear Swimming Pool, Feb. 21 to 23.

Members of Poseidon Swim Club of Carbonear hit the pool for another competition Jan. 31 to Feb 2. Those members were, from left, Allison Somers, Mark Peddle, Drew Forward and Sarah Forward.
