Defeated mayoral candidate offers heartfelt response
Editor’s Note: Defeated mayoral candidate Ches Ash released a letter to The Compass Feb. 19. The Compass has decided to publish the letter in its entirety. Ash lost his second attempt at the mayor’s chair Feb. 18.
First of all I commend Mr. George Butt for his campaign. From my point of view, he conducted a fair and honourable campaign.
I should also like to thank all those who supported me and helped in any way with my campaign.
From my own personal perspective the result was disappointing and surprising. Judging from my response at the door and the well wishes I received on a daily basis from the general public, as I encountered people around town, I had thought that the results would be close and could go in favour of either myself or Mr. Butt.
The people have spoken and indicated their choice for mayor and I accept that choice.
I would be less than honest if I didn’t acknowledge a certain sense of personal rejection or failure and therefore dismay, but that’s when you rely upon your own inner strength, and the strength that comes from encouragement of my supporters, the support of family, friends and, for me as well as for many of us, the spiritual values that come from our Christian conviction and upbringing.
I sincerely wish George every success as mayor. He is a great individual and I’m confident he will be an effective leader for the Town of Carbonear. Without doubt we have a fine group of dedicated and capable individuals making up our council and I wish them every success.
There are many challenges associated with administering and governing a town and I believe that our present council and administration under Mayor Butt’s leadership will respond to these challenges in a constructive and effective manner and I believe that we can look forward to continued growth and development for the town and the provision of quality service to our citizens.
For myself, personally, I simply put this part of my life behind me and move on and find other avenues of service and involvement which will allow me to be of benefit to others and my community. I truly enjoyed my term on council. Yes, it was time consuming and, honestly, sometimes very frustrating, but it was also very rewarding.
After his defeat in the Carbonear mayoral byelection Feb. 18, Ches Ash responds publicly and candidly to the loss.
