Roverines, Ceebees golden at under-12 female tourney
Teams come home with A, D division banners
The Trinity-Conception-Placentia region has its first provincial minor hockey banners for the 2013-14 season.
This came after the CeeBees and Bay Arena Rovers under-12 female teams came back from Corner Brook sporting championships in the A and D divisions, respectively, in the female mega tournament April 4-6.
The tourney featured 20 of the finest female under-12 teams in the province. As it is with the mega tournament format, teams play two preliminary matchups to determine where they will be seeded in the tournament.
The Bay Arena ended up in the A division after finishing the opening round with two wins. This would set up a championship showdown with the Conception Bay Regional Renegades.
It was a dramatic final that saw the Renegades come back from a 5-1 deficit to almost force an overtime period. With the Bay Arena clinging to a 5-4 lead, coach Johnny Reid said his charges refused to let the lead slip away.
“They weren’t going to give that goal up,” he said.
When the buzzer sounded, it was a flurry of flying sticks, gloves and helmets as the players rushed to celebrate the victory.
The Roverines went undefeated, with wins over Botwood ( 10- 0), Clarenvile II (7-0), CBR (3-3), Marystown (2-1) and Clarenville I (4-0).
CeeBees grab gold
Meanwhile, in the championship of the D final, the CeeBees narrowly edged the St. John’s Capitals 2-0.
Things did not start out promising for the players based out of Harbour Grace. The CeeBees dropped its opening game to CBR (3-0), before rebounding with a 2- 2 tie with Churchill Falls. The CeeBees then went on to post wins over Corner Brook (7-1) and St. John’s (1-0), and once again battled to a 2-2 draw with Churchill Falls.
