It was another weekend, another AAAA ball hockey banner for Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts.

This time it was the girls’ turn at winning the provincial banner.

The Astros defeated a tough squad from Menihek High School of Labrador City 8-6 to take the coveted championship at Ascension Collegiate on April 5.

“It was a great feeling to win,” said player Courtney Petten, who had one goal in the championship.

Other scorers were Brooke Williamson (3), Kaila LeDrew (2) and Natalie Keeping (2).

The victory comes a week after the Ascension male team won their provincial tournament.

“They won with focus and discipline,” said coach Fred Simms.

On its march to the final, the female Astros went virtually unchallenged.

The team started the tournament off on April 3 with a 10-5 victory over the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers.

From this point, the Astros would squash any competition that stood in their way by way of impressive foot speed, team play and goaltending.

“We played well and all fought together,” said Natalie Keeping.

First, Ascension bested Marystown High 70 then followed that up with a 7-0 shutout of Botwood Collegiate on April 4.

The Mount Pearl High Huskies awaited the Astros in the semifinals on the morning of April 5. The Huskies got there with a record of two wins and one loss.

Ascension handled the Huskies 7-1 to book their ticket to the championship round.

The victory marked the second straight AAAA provincial banner for the Astros female team.

“It was a great way to end my high school career,” said Petten.

Members of the Astros are: Natalie Keeping, April Squires, Kaila LeDrew, Shelby Batten, Brooke Williamson, Taylor Quinlan, Courtney Caravan, Courtney Petten, Kiana Hodder, Keelee Pham, Britanny Corbett and Chelsey Pike.

Laval captures silver

The Laval High Cavaliers were on the wrong end of a one-goal game in the final of the AAA female ball hockey championship at JM Olds Collegiate in Twillingate on April 5.

The Placentia-based Cavaliers lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to Canon Richards Memorial High of Flower’s Cove in the championship.

After a 5-2 loss to Canon Richards to start the tournament, Laval rattled off three straight victories to punch its ticket to the finals.

The first was a 8-3 victory over Jens Haven Memorial of Nain. That was followed by a tight 5-4 defeat of the hometown JM Olds Collegiate.

In the semifinals, the Cavaliers bested Labrador Straits Academy of L’Anse-au-Loup.

“This is only the second year for the girls team so we are very proud of our team,” said coach Michael Gambin.

Level III student Alicia Culleton received Laval’s sportsmanship award.

Members of the team are: Mikayla Van-derkamer, Allison Kelly, Heather Pike, Hannah Kennedy,

Brittany McCarthy, Alicia Culleton, Kelsey Murdock, Candace Ennis, Cassie Cheeseman and Abigail Gambin.

The Ascension Collegiate Astros female ball hockey team captured its second straight provincial title with a 8-6 victory over Menihek High of Labrador City in the AAAA provincial championships at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts April 3-5.
