This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Miss Teen Trinity Conception pageant, and the committee is looking for female participants from the region to be a part of the milestone event.

“By taking part in the Trinity Conception pageants, contestants have the opportunity to meet other outstanding young women, build confidence, showcase their talents and abilities, meet educational goals, build character and win prizes,” pageant coordinator Sabrina Jenkins told The Compass.

On Sept. 21, at the Trinity Conception Agriculture and Homecrafts Fair in Harbour Grace, contestants from all over the Trinity and Conception bays between ages eight and 18 will compete for the Miss Teen Trinity Conception and Trinity Conception Junior Miss titles during an afternoon gala. This will be the second year for the junior miss competition.

Last year, with a record 27 contestants, teen titleholder Heather Higdon from Green’s Harbour and junior titleholder Aileen Pike of Harbour Grace were crowned at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium.

This year the pageant is expected to be bigger and better than ever, Jenkins said.

She explained the titles are awarded to those in Trinity Conception who are leaders in their communities, volunteers, achievers and those who want to travel the region as role models for younger children.

But, the pageant has also given young females the chance to gain self-confidence.

“Our organization often sees contestants of varying personalities, including those who are shy and reserved to those who are outgoing and talkative, and everything in between,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins added, because of this milestone, there will be some new and exciting additions this year, including new crowns and a special event for both parents and contestants.

And like last year, awards will be given for friendship, people’s choice, photogenic and fitness. A new award in partnership with event sponsors is in the planning stages.

Applicants should be from the Trinity Conception area; Norman’s Cove to Holyrood in the south to Grate’s Cove in the north. The pageant will consist of an interview, fitness test, casual wear, evening wear, and finalists will have to answer impromptu questions. Teens will also have to prepare a short speech on a topic of their choice.

“Our pageant committee prides itself on focusing on the intelligence, academics, leadership and volunteer work of the young women in Trinity Conception,” Jenkins said.

Applications are being accepted for the two age groups — ages eight to 12 for junior and 13-18 for teen. The deadline is Thursday, July 31. Details can be found at www.mis
