— For the first time in many years, Dildo Days celebrations featured the once-popular dory races, with qualifying races in the male and female divisions held on July 20, and the finals held a week later. Three traditional dories were sourced for the event, and organizers are hoping to bring the annual races back to prominence in future years as well. Among those eagerly taking to the dory was 70 year-old Gerald Smith Sr., who served as coxswain in a crew that also included his son, Darrell ( in the bow seat) and his nephew, who is also named Gerald Smith (No. 2 oar). Gerald Smith Sr. took part in dory races in the 1980s, when they were last held in Dildo. This crew finished third in the men’s final, with top honours going to the trio of Eric Pretty, Dwayne Reid and Shane Reid.
