CUTTING COD

The Compass - - FRONT PAGE -

— Dave Russell of Bay Roberts is a slick hand with the knife, and this voluminous cod fish would agree, if it weren’t being sliced into meal sized fillets. Russell is a wellknown player in the fishery in Conception Bay North and beyond, and operates a fish processing company in the town. He was observed filleting some freshly caught fish at his plant on Water Street on Saturday, July 19. The fish were landed by Russell’s son, Jason, and some of his friends during opening day of the recreational groundfish fishery. Russell quickly stepped in after watching his son clumsily employ the wellhoned knife, not shy about showing the younger set how it’s done. The final day for the summer fishery, meanwhile, is Aug. 10, while the fall fishery is scheduled for Sept. 20-28.
