New home for annual dog show
Organizers leave Harbour Grace; event to be held at Bay Arena
A longtime event at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace has found new digs.
The Conception Bay Kennel Club is moving its annual dog show to the neighbouring community of Bay Roberts and the Bay Arena. The evenet is scheduled for Aug. 9-10.
The move ends a 54-year connection to the S.W. Moores and is being seen as another example of another event/service leaving the Town of Harbour Grace in recent months.
“It’s a big change,” said club president Lauralee Hiscock.
The road to change started when the club went looking for a new date for the show. Traditionally, it has been tied to Labour Day weekend in September.
This year the show is going a month earlier. “It was just to try something new,” said Hiscock. However, those who manage the stadium in Harbour Grace could not give the group an answer as to the schedule for the month. During the same weekend, there are other shows in Atlantic Canada which conflicted with the Conception Bay North event.
“We had people leave the province and go up there because the numbers are higher,” said Hiscock.
The new weekend makes it the only one of its kind running at the time. Bringing dogs in With the CBN show being the only one of its kind on the Aug. 9-10 weekend, the hope is it will bring a few more pets and their owners to the event. “We’re trying to pull people in,” said Hiscock. Last year, the Conception Bay club had 70 dogs appear at their show. That is down from the as many as 100 dogs in the past.
“We love what we do,” said Hiscock. “We want to be successful.” Town’s view Harbour Grace Deputy Mayor Sonia Williams said it is “unfortunate” the group decided to relocate the show to the Bay Arena. “It’s a surprise, really,” she said. Williams also serves as the town’s liasion with the S.W. Moores. She said the town would welcome the return of the show next year.
On that note, Hiscock indicated the decision to move the dog show may not be a permanent one, and the club could look at returning next year.
“We thought we would try it this year and see how it works out. That’s just what it’s about,” she said. “There are no hard feelings.”
