Placentia regatta site receives funding
The provincial government will be investing in the Placentia rowing and regatta site.
In a news release issued July 31, Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, announced $100,000 to assist with the completion of enhancements to the site.
The announcement comes just weeks after the running of the 51st edition of the popular event on July 19.
“The regatta in Placentia is a culturally-significant event and generates considerable economic spinoffs for the region, such as visitors using local accommodations and service facilities. Our funding of $100,000 supported considerable improvements to the Placentia Rowing Club’s facilities,” said Sullivan, while touring the refurbished grounds.
The site is an important one for the region as it is used for more than just the regatta. This funding aims to develop the infrastructure necessary to take advantage of future economic opportunities.
The Placentia Regatta attracts some 12,000 visitors each year and is considered significant to tourism growth in the region.
“The Placentia Rowing Club has done tremendous work in recent years in developing the regatta into a signature sporting event. With the addition of the recently opened boat house, this funding will greatly enhance the site and help develop it into a premiere sporting venue,” said Placentia- St. Mary’s MHA Felix Collins.
The refurbishment to the grounds comes after the previous government restored the Placentia Boat House.
“This investment has allowed us t o n o t o n l y p r o v i de a n improved regatta experience, but a better year-round facility ready to welcome rowers and other water enthusiasts,” said Eugene Collins with the Placentia Rowing Club.
